How Healthy Are You?
What is the definition of health to you? Would you define it in a singular fashion or is it multifactorial? There are many definitions of health and many ways to look at it, but what we subscribe to at Results Rehab (and what research is finding) is that in order to properly address a person's needs, we must take the WHOLE person into account, not just one aspect.
In the physical therapy world, we call this the Biopsychosocial Model (1). This states that to fully understand a person's medical condition we must take into consideration the:
Biological (physiological pathology)
Psychological (thoughts, emotions, and behaviors such as psychological distress, fear/avoidance beliefs, current coping methods and attribution)
Social (socio-economical, socio-environmental, and cultural factors such as work issues, family circumstances, and benefits/economics)
Many people find that this model brings real, long-lasting health improvements. Some things that can help are:
Fun exercise 4-5 days per week
Massages
Quality time with friends/loved ones
Spiritual time (prayer, meditation…)
At Results Rehab, we will always challenge you to meet your full potential by maximizing your health in all three of these categories, so that you are successful in reaching your long-term goals. Let this information be your reminder today to continue moving towards your goals by putting your health first.
Sincerely,
Dr. James
